Getting started

How does it work?

FiLMCiRCLE exchanges DVD and Blue-Ray disks you've already watched for something new.

First, you list your old disks in Films I'm offering. When another member chooses one, you will be asked to post it to them. When they receive it, you earn credit.

Next, you spend your credit on other disks in Films I'd Like. They are posted to you.

How do I list disks?

See... How do I list Films I'm offering? or How do I list Films I'd Like?

How do I earn credit?

You can build credit in several ways:

By offering disks. When someone receives one, you gain credit.

Tell a friend... We'll give you £10 credit if your friend subscribes to FiLMCiRCLE (after their free trial). They must mention your email or screen name in 'further information' when they Join.

You can also buy credit online using PayPal or a credit card.

I’m under 18 with loads of old DVDs. Why can’t I join?

Sorry about this. Many of the films listed are age restricted. Why not join forces with an older friend or parent?

Managing your account

Why can’t I pay my annual subscription with the credit from my account?

Honest truth? We have to make a living! We ask for just £2 a month. This keeps FiLMCiRCLE free of those horrible pop-up ads.

Can I turn my FiLMCiRCLE credit into cash?

No. FiLMCiRCLE credit isn't real money. We use a credit system because different disks have different values. Credit can only be spent on DVDs or Blu-Rays from FiLMCiRCLE.co.uk or one of its sister sites, and you must have a valid subscription to spend it.

How do I change my personal details?

Vist My Account to change your details.

What if I’m too busy or going on holiday?

In My Account, tick ‘I can’t get to the post’ . Your Films I'm offering will no longer be visible to other members, but your Films I’d like stay active so if you have enough credit, new films will still be delivered whilst you are away.

Buy credit

How do I cancel my subscription?

Log in to your PayPal account and click 'Profile'. Then click 'Recurring payments dashboard' and cancel your subscription. You may cancel your membership or subscription at any time but your payment is not refundable.

About Filmcircle

How much does it cost?

Membership is £24 for a year but you can try it out free for the first month, without obligation. In practice, the main cost of using FiLMCiRCLE is postage, from 48p per disk.

more about subscription

Is film rental dead?

FiLMCiRCLE beats your local video shop because it is costs less, saves two journeys and doesn't charge ‘late fees’. It also costs less than online DVD rental such as Lovefilm, Blockbuster online, and Tesco.

Disks through FiLMCiRCLE are yours to keep or pass on again - you don’t have to send them back. You also own the cover and artwork, and multiple disk sets come complete, rather than one at a time in random order.

FiLMCiRCLE is greener than online rental sites because we are sharing resources and because delivery is only one way.

Is it eco-friendly?

Very. FiLMCiRCLE means more people share one resource. Re use is even better than recycling because material are not reprocessed.

FiLMCiRCLE reduces your carbon footprint. According to Disney, manuafacturing one DVD creates a staggering 350 grams of CO2 - the same as leaving a 100W light bulb on for over a week.

FiLMCiRCLE's main environmental impact is postage, but it requires one journey per transaction - half that of online DVD rental companies such as such as Lovefilm, Blockbuster online, and Tesco.

Why should I use FiLMCiRCLE when I can just sell my old disks for cash?

One thing that inspired FiLMCiRCLE was the disappointing prices our old DVDs fetched. Commission fees or just low offer prices would leave us with a fraction of the value.

Other than membership, FiLMCiRCLE charges no fee or commission, so you never lose the value of your disk when you exchange. We use a virtual currency because different disks have different values.

Unlike general swap sites, FiLMCiRCLE is designed specifically for film lovers. It is quicker and easier to list disks than Ebay or Amazon, because the site is designed for exactly that.

Will I have to post disks abroad?

Nope. Your Circle is only in your country.

Who is behind FiLMCiRCLE?

FiLMCiRCLE Ltd is run by a small, ethical group of film lovers who like the idea of sharing things to keep costs down. The idea was originally convceived in 2004 somewhere between the DVD section and the till in Asda.

If you’d like to know more about us or the films we’ve enjoyed recently, please contact us.

FiLMCiRCLE is a British Limited Company number 06177606.

Selling disks to earn credit (Films I’m offering)

How do I list a disk I’d like to sell?

Listing films I'm exchanging, offering or swapping

1. Type a few letters of the film title, wait a moment, then select it from the list

2. Click ‘Add’

3. Select the condition of your disk - hold it up to the light to see any scratches.

4. Say what you thought of the film

5. Enter a price you would accept, including delivery

6. If someone already wants the disk, the price they offer appears under 'Wanted?'

7. Click ‘Save’, read the message carefully and ‘Confirm'

You can update your price or delete the listing at any time before another member buys this disk. If you need to post the disk, you'll receive an email.

What if the DVD or Blu-Ray disk I want to sell isn’t listed?

FiLMCiRCLE holds over 100,000 titles but if your disk isn't listed click Film not listed and tell us as much as you can about the disk. Disks you add must be UK-release and play on a Region 2 DVD player or a Region 'B' Blu-Ray player. We can't promise to accept your listing.

What disks can I offer on FiLMCiRCLE?

You can list any commercially released films or TV programe on DVD or Blu-Ray providing they play on a Region 2 DVD player or a Region 'B' Blu-Ray player.

My disk doesn’t match any of your conditions. What should I list it as?

Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. Would you be pleased to receive this disk?
If in doubt choose the poorer condition. The condition refers to the disk itself, not the case.

I can't get my prices to save

When you have selected a condition AND entered a price, 'Save' will appear. Click it and follow the dialogue to complete the listing.

I can't get 'Save' to appear

Make sure you have selected a condition AND entered a price

What is ‘Wanted?’ ?

This is the highest price that someone will pay for your disk right now. If you 'Save' this price then your disk is sold.

How do I choose a price?

Ask yourself - ‘What am I prepared to accept, plus postage cost?’
You can get an idea of typical prices in The Circle. You can look at the same same disk on eBay or Amazon, but remember they add seller fees and delivery.

Once you have offered the disk, if you see 'Best Price', this means no one else is offering this title in this condition or poorer, for less than you.

Once you have listed a disk, if someone already wants it, you will see their price (no. 5 in the picture above). You can match this price to sell the disk instantly, or you can ask a higher price and wait for a better offer.

What does ‘Best price’ mean?

‘Best price’ means your price is the lowest price for a disk in this condition or poorer. As long as ‘Best Price’ shows, yours will be the next copy to sell.

It said ‘Best price’ and now it doesn’t. What happened?

This is because another member has offered a lower price than yours.

What does ‘Post this disk’ mean?

'Post this disk' appears when someone has paid the price you asked - you have sold this disk! The listing can no longer be edited. Click ‘Post this disk’ to see the address. When you have posted the disk, click ‘I’ve posted this’. The buyer now knows it is on its way.

I sold a disk and posted it - where’s my credit?

The post can take a few days. When the buyer gets the disk they click ‘Received & OK’ and you get your credit. You can remind them by clicking ‘Problem?’ on your listing.

What if I’ve posted a disk, but the buyer says they haven’t received it?

We constantly monitor transactions and can say that FiLMCiRCLE members are a very reliable bunch. Occasionally things do get lost in the post and as the seller, you should consider proof of postage which may be requested in this situation. If this happens to you, you should click 'Problem' on the listing and follow the instructions that follow.

How do I prove that I’ve posted a disk?

You can use recorded or registered post or you can ask for a free ‘certificate of postage’ at any Post Office.

What happens if I forget to post a disk

The integrity of FiLMCiRCLE relies on the commitment of our members. Accordingly we take that responsibility very seriously. If someone commits to buy your disk, we will tell you by email. The buyer has paid and is now waiting for the disk which you have promised to post to them. If you do not click post the disk within a few days, the buyer is likely to raise a dispute against you which we will then follow up.

If you know you will not have access to your email or the internet, or won’t be able to get to the post, for more than a few days, please go to My account and click 'I can’t get to the post' (this doesn’t stop you from receiving new disks).

I’ve lost the disk which I am supposed to be sending. What should I do?

This is a serious situation as you have committed to the sale of the disk. You should contact us straight away.

Why is it good for me to rate films?

Use the rating drop down in Films I'm Offering and The Circle, because this is how the system gets to know your taste so it can recommend other films you are more likely to enjoy. Buyers don't see your ratings, so don't give a bad film a good rating in order to sell it.

Why is it good for me to review films?

You can review any film you have seen by clicking "Write a quick review" either in The Circle or Films I'm Offering. Your review appears next to the film listing in The Circle and it helps people to choose. If you didn't enjoy the film, think of something you did like about it, or describe the sort of person who would enjoy it. Be honest in your reviews, because it works both ways!

Can I sell disks that came free with the newspaper?

Yes, providing they play in a DVD or Blu-Ray player (not computer disks). You must choose the 'Free with the newspaper' version if it is listed. If it is not listed, click Film not listed and tick 'Free with newspaper' when adding the disk.

I can't get 'Save' to appear

Please make sure you have selected a condition AND entered a price.

How do I stop The Circle recommending things I’ve already seen?

Simple - just rate the film using the drop-down next to each film. The Circle omits these and uses your ratings to make better recommendations to you in the future. You can also click hide this in the future , which will hide this title in the future.

What is ‘Available?’ ?

This is the lowest priced disk available right now in the condition you’ve set or better. If the price is blank, it is not available right now - you could try a poorer condition, or list it anyway and wait until someone offers it.

How do I choose a price?

Ask yourself “What am I prepared to pay for this film, delivered to my door?”. Once listed, you will see the current price if this title is available. You can match this to buy it right now, or set your price lower and wait for a cheaper deal.

What does ‘Best price’ mean?

In Films I’d like, Best price means your are offering the highest price for this title. If it becomes available and you have enough credit, it's yours!

It said ‘Best price’ and now it doesn’t. What happened?

In Films I’d like, this is EITHER because another member has offered a higher price than you OR because you have insufficient credit. Raise your price, wait for a cheaper disk or buy some credit.

I’d like a particular film, I'm offering the ‘Currently selling at’ price but nothing happens

If you see ‘Buy credit’ you don’t have enough credit for this film.

If you see 'To be posted' on the right, you have successfully bought the film. It will arrive soon.

If neither of the above, re-enter the price then 'Save' again

What if my disk doesn’t arrive?

We've found FiLMCiRCLE members to be a reliable bunch! But if your disk does not arrive, or is not as expected, you should click 'Problem' on the right side of the listing and remind the seller to post the disk. After a reasonable amount of time has gone by, if the disk still hasn't arrived, you should raise a dispute which we will then investigate.

When you receive a disk you must click 'Received and OK' for the seller to receive their credit.

What if I’m unhappy with the disk I receive?

You should raise a dispute by clicking 'Problem?' Please complete the form with as much detail as possible.
